1863 British Penny Donated to The British Museum

June 13, 2016

On August 6th, 1967, Renzo Pagliari donated a bronze penny of Queen Victoria dated 1863 to the British Museum (while the letter from The British Museum is dated September 1st, 1967, the Museum's Register shows the donation was done on August 6th, 1967).

The British Museum was very appreciative of the donation, since it was an unique addition to the Museum's collection.

The donation was recorded in the Museum's Register (Registry Number 1967,0806.1) and can still be seen today (as recently as June 2016).

As it is tradition, notes were written about the donation, including the following hand written notes about the 1863 penny.

The 1863 Victoria penny is still at display at The British Museum's Collections of Coins & Medals. It has been digitized by The Museum and can be viewed online (click this link.)

The Museum's Online Catalog shows the following information about the coin.

An enlarged version of the digitized coin image can also be seen in the Catalog.

On June 9th, 2016, Ana Maria and Gabriel Goncalves were in London and were received by The Museum's Curator of Modern Money, Tom Hockenhull.  They were given a private viewing of the Victoria penny and were given a preview of the information to be posted in the Museum's Online Catalog.

The British Museum is in the process of updating the biography of Renzo Pagliari - with the assistance of the family's information and visit to the Museum. The updated biography will be available in the near future.

The Life of Guilherme Giorgi

With the recent “discovery” of a lost movie describing the success of the textile industry in Brazil for the family of Guilherme Giorgi, I decided to “get the story straight”. I had several conversations with my parents, aunts, and uncles asking about “the old man” (their grandfather), and ask for details of Guilherme’s life. Slowly a story emerged describing how a family in northern Italy decided to look for better fortunes in the new continent , leaving Lucca, Italy, and immigrating to Sao Paulo, Brazil. This is the story of Guilherme, his parents, and brothers and sisters conquering the difficulties to create a successful life in Brazil, to create one of Brazil’s most successful family fortunes of the 1900’s.
